went to swap the scope on my savage axis, i cant get the screws to back off on the front ring they just strip im scared of stripping them further, any tips?
Do you mean the ones holding the scope rings to the base or the ones holding the top of the ring. If it's the ones holding the top of the ring. Put the screwdriver or allen key in the screw( whichever yours has) and give it a couple of light taps straight down on the screw with a small hammer. Go easy you don't want to damage anything. I've had to do this to break any corrosion or loctite. It has worked well for me in the past. Spray some penetrating oil on the screws first and let it sit for a bit.
If they are the top ring screws, they are not to have had locktite. If they have I hope it was blue not red. You can get a release agent for this product. If the hex head is a concern as it is now about to strip try a small square, or spiral easy out to back the item out. Square would be my choice. If you were close I would give you one. I would not recommend striking this area with scope in place.
If they are Allen head and starting to strip you can sometimes get lucky and find a Torx bit that can be tapped into the screw with a small hammer. Also if you take a hair dryer and warm up the ring around the screw threads it should break the locktight free if there is any.
If you continue to have a problem and you wish to try an extractor, I could look for one in the garage that may work and send it to you, I believe I have small ones. A lot of machinists in the family.
thanks guys it is the top rings the back ones backed off no issue but the front two on either side just wont budge, ill try some of your suggested methods, i may just replace the rings as suggested as well
if its only the rings.. just drill them out if you have to and get new rings,,,
