Unfortunately I don't have pix, but my neighbor caught an all black coyote back in the 1980's. Just a little spot of white on the chest. He caught quite a few coyotes and this one was the biggest he ever caught. When he sent it to the fur sale it actually was sold in with a timber wolf lot. He got a really good dollar for it, but in hindsight I think he wished he had kept it and made a rug. I shot a couple very light blonde yotes, and called in a black one that circled down wind and never gave me a shot. I talked to a trapper this year that had five red yotes, all from the same farm, mature male and female, plus three younger yotes, he thought were all a family group.
Have not caught any odd colored ones this year but have caught a lot of blonds & a red fox colored. I did catch a dark colored with funny feet, toe nails were all wore off and he look partly dewarfed. I'll see if I can get the pic's of mixed colored coyotes posted. I had the red fox colored tanned because they are classed as off color and aren't worth much. The last Blonde I sold I got $7.00 for it, better to tan & sell.
I have seen a couple of really dark ones over the years. they were really big compared to most I have seen/shot. most of the yotes we see in our area are light/dark brownish/grey colors.
I missed a very blond one with a muzzleloader this year, caught me off guard I thought it was a dog at first.Ive caught some reddish ones before they sure aren't worth much.
ive only killed a handfull of yotes but have seen a bunch and called in a fair number....my recollection is that the lighter colored ones seemed to be much larger than the typical colored ones....just an observation and perhaps not even all that accurate being left to memory...I do know tho, the biggest ones I have seen were light colored....Ive often wondered if it was an age thing?
Three or four years ago I tried yote hunting for the first time. The second time out I had a black one, that at first I was sure was a border collie as it looked exactly like one and was about the same size, fly out of the woods straight at my quiver decoy, knock it over and kept going. It looked so much like a dog that I hesitated and never even got a shot away. It was followed closely by another 'regular' coloured yote that I did get 2 running shots at...took some fur but no real hit! Never saw the black one again although I hunted that area 6 or 7 more times. Pretty cool though.
There is a black female that hangs out back of my place. See her usually once a year. Last year she followed me and the dog for a while. Came face to face with her. She just walked away and watched me from behind a spruce tree. I walk the same area every day. Guess they are just used to seeing me. My neighbour tried calling there but had no luck.
Ive caught a few off colored ones over the years but never a black one. I did tan a black and white one maybe 8-10 years ago from CB. I thought he shot a husky.
That yellowish/red color is a real popular one in southern ON.
